Have you ever just sat at the end of a movie, book, or TV show and just let your mind run wild about what just happened? Maybe the ending was crazy. Maybe there was a big twist. Maybe someone died you didn’t think would. Some movies that come to mind immediately would be Inception, Six Sense, and Avengers: Infinity War. But WOW, I just had this happen at the end of a game, specifically God of War (the PS4 release from April 2018).

Originally, I bought this game on day 1 and started playing the second it was installed on my system, but my fiancé (Adam) also wanted to play this game; I would play during the week and he would play during the weekends when he was off of work. It wasn’t long before he passed my save point in the game so I told him that he could play it until he was finished and then I would beat it later. Adam was sucked into the story, played whenever he could, and completed everything that was possible to do in the game . When E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo, the largest gaming convention held in Los Angles) rolled around in June, Adam kept asking me to keep a look out for any God of War news for extra content. It is safe to say that the game became one of Adam’s favorites from this generation of games. And I completely agree with him.

It took me longer than I would have liked, but I finally finished God of War myself today and I can see why Adam kept asking about more content. I have always liked the premise of the God of War games as the original trilogy dealt with Greek Mythology (I love ancient history!). I won’t go into detail here about the first three, but the fourth game takes place long after the events of the first three games and enters into Norse Mythology. The story follows Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they are on a journey to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife, Atreus’ mother, on the highest peak in the land. Their journey takes them through many trials as Kratos finds the courage to tell Atreus about his godhood and Atreus having to come to terms with the world and gods around him. There is a lot more to this story, but I’d rather you experience for yourself. The story is gripping, engaging, touching, moving, and every other feeling of emotion I can think of! Because of this you will keep coming back for more. But the end, that is where I was stunned.

I am highly fond of games with amazing stories and God of War is no exception, but you cannot have a great story without a great ending and God of War nailed it. Not only did it have multiple plot-twists up until the very end, but there were three (YES, THREE) endings that expanded on the story and the world itself. After each one, I sat in my chair and just let the gears in my head whirl as I thought about what everything could mean and what the twists could mean for the future of the series and its characters. I will not spoil anything for those who are playing this game or will play it eventually, but I can say for certain that there will be another installment in this series and I cannot wait to play it!

There is a reason that God of War has a score of 94/100 on Metacritic (Metacritic is a rating site that compiles all major critic and user reviews for games, movies, and more). This game had a compelling story, great character development, humor, intense action, smooth gameplay, gorgeous scenery, and an ending that left me wanting more. So much more! This game has a great chance at winning Game of the Year this year and at this point, it definitely has my vote. I hope you all get a chance to experience the story of God of War for yourselves as it is one you won’t want to miss.

There are many other games out there with amazing stories and I hope to cover some more in the future, but for now you should go play God of War and I will too since I still have some Valkyries to rescue!!
